The Windows to Your Soul

As the eyes are said to be the "window to the soul"; when looking at someone, we usually look into their eyes first. One of the common signs of aging are the "sagging" lids; sometimes they even interfere with our visual fields and can be accompanied by protruding fat pads, and wrinkles.

Are your eyes experiencing "aging"? There is a great procedure for rejuvenating the eyes and the periorbital area: Blepharoplasty. Blepharoplasty can address the redundant tissue: saggy lid tissue usually of the upper lids, and to a lesser extent the lowers lids; and can help with some of the "extra fat" protrusions. However, recent studies have shown certain amounts, and strategically positioned amounts of fat provides benefits in the youthful appearance of the periorbital area, so not all blepharoplasties need to automatically entail fat removal.

The procedure can be done as an outpatient under general or local anesthesia, and recovery is relatively quick, with patients able to return to work within a week or so for jobs that don't require too much physical activity. It is also a popular procedure for men, who like the effect it has on making them appear more youthful.

The scars are usually minimal, and when possible, I like to use the "subconjunctival" approach to address the lower lids which places the scar inside the lower lid and therefore not visible. Occasionaly a scar is necessary on the lower lid to remove excess skin but it is placed under the lashes to make it less noticeable.

Some of the more prominent "wrinkles" around the eyes may be helped with blepharoplasty, but this is usually a "texture" problem that is better addressed with other procedures such as peels and good skin care, and possible laser resurfacing.

Insurance does not usually cover this procedure unless the upper lids interfere with vision. It is usually necessary to get a test called "visual fields" to help determine this. A pre-determination needs to be sent to the insurance carrier.
